Tai Chi Chuan (or simply Tai Chi) is an ancient Chinese martial art that is both a self-defense method and martial art that promotes wellness of mind and body.

Tai Chi is an exercise system that, according to the National Institutes of Health, improves physiological and psychological functions, provides a better sense of

well-being, and increased quality of life.

With its emphasis on mind and body, Tai Chi is a proactive approach to both prevent disease as well as repair the effects of a disease, various injuries, and other physical limitations.

More and more health professionals are recommending regular Tai Chi practice to their patients due to significant health benefits.  Folks who suffer from various conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, MS, back issues, insomnia, high blood pressure, chronic fatigue and hypertension (to name a few) have found Tai Chi to be beneficial.

Additionally, many of our students have experienced improved flexibility, better balance, greater muscular tone and strength, excess energy, improved breathing and enhanced coordination.

We are all getting older so it makes sense to do those activities that will slow down the aging process.  Along with proper diet and the right amount of sleep and rest, the right type of exercise is very beneficial as well.  The Harvard Women’s Health Watch says of Tai Chi, “This gentle form of exercise can prevent or ease many ills of aging and could be the perfect activity for the rest of your life.”

Tai Chi is a wonderful form of exercise in that it requires no extra equipment or clothing.

No special environment is needed so Tai Chi can be practiced anywhere.  And the amount of time required or the time of day is quite flexible.   A trip to the gym requires you to carve out an hour or more each time you work out, whereas Tai Chi can be spread throughout your day.

Tai Chi is appropriate for all ages.  At NEMA, we have had teenage students as well as students in their 70’s and 80’s.  The practice is slow and gentle.  It does not matter how “in shape” one is.  Anyone regardless of physical conditioning will benefit from regular Tai Chi practice.

It is important however that you learn and practice proper Tai Chi, which is how Northeastern Martial Arts can help.  We offer several convenient evening and

weekend classes where you will learn proper Tai Chi postures and movement.

Classes are small and informal.  Students at NEMA Dojo are able to learn at their own pace in a relaxing and fun atmosphere.
